HEALTH

Travelers in Romania most often suffer from diarrhea (you have to be careful about it, what is eating, and have a remedy on hand just in case). Tap water is almost always potable; You can often quench your thirst in the street or in a train station with taps provided for this purpose. It's better not to try to befriend every dog you meet (the risk of contracting rabies is admittedly low, but you never know). Recently, cases of cholera have been reported near Tirgu Mu-res and on the coast.

Until recently, women's personal hygiene products and contraceptives were considered an inaccessible luxury. Currently, the first ones are easily available, it is a bit worse with others. It is worth bringing something against insects with you, especially in summer, as well as a sunscreen cream.

In the event of more serious health problems, pharmacy employees are available to help; some know a foreign language, and almost all have the authority to write prescriptions. Theoretically, in each city there should be one pharmacy open 24/7 or at least have an emergency telephone number displayed in the window.. Western embassies have lists of addresses for English-speaking doctors. However, the Pole will probably rely on his own eloquence in Romanian. As a foreign person, can count on the favor of the local health service, however, he should be prepared to pay a generous bribe, preferably in hard currency. It should not be forgotten, that hospitals and clinics in the provinces lack medical equipment and even basic medicines. The situation is slightly better in district hospitals (County Hospital). In an emergency, you can call the ambulance service (first aid lub station) tel.961.

One third of all European mineral and medicinal water springs are concentrated on the territory of Romania.

The country is over 160 spas. The action of mud baths at Lake Techirgol in Northern Eforia is supported by the specific properties of the salt waters of the lake and the nearby Black Sea. Other important spa towns are Baile Felix near Oradea) oraz Baile Herculane (known since antiquity).

First aid kit

A handy first aid kit should be included in your luggage. Its basic equipment are:

• painkillers and antipyretics (np. Panadol, Aspirin)

• antiallergic agent (np. Benadryl) -used for colds, allergies, insect bites, and to prevent nausea while driving. Because these drugs can cause dementia, they also react to alcohol, be especially careful when taking them

• antibiotics (Ciproxim, Bactrim, Amoxyclina, Metronidazole) – especially useful, when less traveled tourist routes are traversed,- they are only available on prescription. If you are allergic to any antibiotic, np. penicillin, always inform your doctor in advance, to replace a given drug with another

• Peptobismol, Lomotil, Codeine – for ailments of the digestive tract

• rehydration fluid – preventing dehydration in acute diarrhea. Especially handy, if you are traveling with small children

• wound disinfectants – they can be liquid, spray, ointments or powders

• antihistamine cream – preventing skin irritation, np. after being bitten or stung by an insect; antifungal powder – np. zinc oxide

• bandages, gauze dressing, slices

• scissors, tweezers and thermometer (Caution: mercury thermometers are not allowed on airplanes)

• insect repellants, oil or cream for and after sunbathing

Of course, antibiotics, like other medications, should only be taken as prescribed by your doctor, and under no circumstances should you take them alone. Please note, to always take the entire course of antibiotics prescribed, even if there has already been a marked improvement. Because these types of drugs are designed to combat only the symptoms of the disease, therefore, in the event of serious side effects, it is necessary to immediately discontinue them. Otherwise, they can seriously harm your health.

Pre-travel health check

Before embarking on a long trip, you should always get checked your health, to prevent any unpleasant surprises later. This is especially true of the condition of the dentition. People who wear glasses on a daily basis should bring a spare pair as well, additionally, a backup prescription from your ophthalmologist.

Regular users of medication are advised to take with them an appropriate number, because they will not always be available in local pharmacies. If necessary, take the prescription and the packaging with the given ingredients with you, in order to obtain a suitable substitute in the absence of a given type of medicine. It's best to always show your prescription, because there are drugs, which are sold without a prescription in one pharmacy, in others it is required.

Basic ailments and diseases

These factors are the most common source of health problems, like temperature fluctuations, height and driving by means of transport. In case of symptoms of the disease, it is best to see a doctor immediately.

Sun burns – While staying in sunny areas, especially in the mountains, it is very easy to get dermatitis from the harmful rays of the sun. Burns even then, when the sky is covered with clouds. You can avoid them, using appropriate creams and emulsions, containing UV filters, and by protecting parts of the body, which are more prone to burns, np. feet. A sun hat will protect the head and face, but it won't hurt to smear your nose and mouth with the cream. Non-dangerous burns are lubricated with a solution of calamine.

Exhaustion of the body – Dehydration and loss of mineral salts often lead to exhaustion. Fatigue is a symptom of a deficiency of mineral salts in the body, headache, dizziness, and muscle spasms. If you have already experienced the above symptoms, the missing salt should be supplied to the body, taking the appropriate tablets. The main causes of dehydration are vomiting and diarrhea; then the organism loses the mineral salts necessary for its functioning.
