THE MOUTH OF HUMOR

This is a small town of lumberjacks, 36 km west of Suceava, on the main railway line to Cluj, is an ideal base for visiting the monasteries. Most trains stop here, and the station adjacent to the bus station is within a seven-minute walk from the center. At the main bulevardul Bucovina, east of the post office, there is an Ethnographic Museum (closed. pn.) – under no. 21.

From Gura Humorului there are eight buses a day to the painted churches in Humor and Voronetu, approx. 6 km. There are much less buses on Sunday, but you can go back on foot, and at the same time see small farms and traditional wooden huts. During summer, both monasteries are open until 20.00.

Sightseeing

Voronet – the final judgment, occupying the entire western wall of the monastery in Voronetu (Voronet Monastery), it is probably the most beautiful of all frescoes in Bukovina. At the top, the angels curl the signs of the zodiac, which symbolizes the end of time. In the center you can see people waiting for the judgment. On the left, St.. Paul leads the faithful, and on the right Moses points the way for the unbelievers. They represent the latter – in accordance with the views at that time – The Jews, Turks, Tatars, Armenians and Africans (left to right). The section below shows the resurrected; some wild animals give up previously eaten body parts.

At the top of the north wall are illustrations of scenes from the Book of Genesis, from Adam and Eve on the left to Cain and Abel on the right. On the south wall there is a tree of Jesse with a genealogy of biblical characters. The vertical painting on the left shows the martyrdom of St.. John of Suceava (buried in the monastery of Sfintu Ioan cel Nou in Suceava). Inside, in front of the iconostasis, hangs the famous portrait of Stefan the Great, sacrificing to Christ the church in Voronetu. The temple was built on the orders of the prince of St. 1470 r., while the picture is from the year 1547. It is worth paying attention to the intense color of the frescoes – is a unique dye known in the world as "Voronet blue."”.

Humor – At the Humor Monastery (Humor Monastery), inhabited by nice nuns, the most beautiful paintings are on the southern outer wall (1530). With a strongly faded depiction of the siege of Constantinople by 1453 r. adjacent to the right The Return of the Prodigal Son. The fresco in the atrium is the Last Judgment, while inside, scenes of martyrdom are shown. In the central part of the church there is the tomb of Toader Bubuiog, at the command of which the church was built. Founder's portrait (offering the temple to Christ) it hangs a little above, to the left of the tomb. In Humor there are the most magnificent interior frescoes in Bukovina.

Accommodation

In the four-story Carpati hotel (tel.030/231103) at the strada 9 May 3 – the street running next to the post office – an overnight stay costs money 13 $ from person.

The hostel also invites you to stay overnight (cabana) Arinis at the foot of a wooded hill, 1 km south of Gura Humorolui (5 $ from person). You can get there, walking from the train station to the river and then down the right bank to the bridge at the entrance to the Dendrologie Park, continue across the park to the suspension bridge, leading directly to the shelter. By car – the road to Voronet (just south of the bridge you have to turn left). It is less than an hour on foot to Voroneta. You can eat in the hostel itself or in a large restaurant with a terrace, at the suspension bridge.

Gastronomy

The two main restaurants in the city are Moldova, on the left after the bridge (walking from the station), oraz Bucovina, on the right in front of the cinema. Both serve simple pork dishes and soups.

Journey

Gura Humorului is situated on the main railway line from Suceava to Cluj. It runs from here, among others. seven buses to Humor, eight to Voroneta, one to Arbor and two to Radowiec. There are significantly fewer of them on weekends. Having little time, a thick wallet, you can hire a taxi here and pass quickly that way” monasteries.
