Mother

Mother (parent) is the Romanian Cote d'Azur or Palm Beach - eight kilometers of beaches stretching from Constana to the north between the freshwater lake Mamaia (Siu-ghiol) and the seashore. Accommodation is provided here 61 hotels, offering in total 21 000 places. In high season (from mid-June to August) in fact, you can't find anything free in them.

People rest here, swimming, taking the sun, drinking beer and walking on the promenade. It is very close to Constana – you just need to take the bus.

Sightseeing

During summer, ferries transport tourists to Ovidiu Island on Lake Mamaia. They depart every hour or two from the waterfront near Mamaia Casino, right behind the Casino Bazar.

Various types of water sports are practiced on the beaches and on the lake, for example water skiing, yachting, rowing and pedal boats.

Use of the tennis courts at Gravina Boema, on the road between the Doina and Mictońa hotels, it costs 7 $ per hour, along with equipment rental.

Organized trips – Biuro Littoral, based in the Perla hotel, organizes multi-day trips to the Danube Delta (from 47 $), for wine tasting in Murfatlar (20 $ along with a meal) and detours of seaside resorts, all the way to Neptune in the south (25 $ including a meal). Tours are only arranged from May to September for groups of at least 20 people (in summer, the condition is easy to meet).

Accommodation

Camping – The Mamaia Campground is located far at the northern end of the eight-kilometer isthmus. It is small and impossibly overcrowded in the season.

Hanul Piratilor camp site is located between the main road and the beach, 3 km north of Mamai (bus #23 i 47 from the Pescarie stop). There is never a shortage of places here, but no mobile homes.

Hotels – Most hotels seem hewn from the same block of concrete. The only exception is small, pleasant Albatross (tel.831047), 150 m from the casino. Double rooms with private bathroom cost you here 15 $, in July and August 25 $. Apparently the hotel is open all year round.

Wonderfully located, not far from the resort center, Casino Bazar offers modest rooms without bathrooms only in summer, overlooking the sea (12 $ for two). Before it pays off, it's worth taking a look at the rooms, because they differ significantly in equipment (basically nothing more than four bare walls and mattresses on the floor are to be expected). You can meet with the offer of accommodation in a private room.

The multi-storey building at the south end of the promenade is the Perlą Hotel (tel.831670). Standard ones / doubles / triples cost accordingly 22/35/40 $).

If you are having trouble finding a place, Hotel Siret (tel.831435) i Alcor (tel.831202), at the northern end of the isthmus, they sell and accept hotel passes (at reception you have to talk to ACR representatives), but only from mid-June to August. Passes are not accepted anywhere in Mamaia for the remainder of the year.

Gastronomy

There is a restaurant next to almost every hotel, where typical pork dishes and grilled meat patties are served. At the fast food stands along the promenade, you can quickly satisfy your first hunger. Nice cuisine and the view of the beach in the Delta restaurant by the casino compensate for the rudeness of the local staff. The tourist restaurant Hanul Piratilor is located opposite Hanul Piratilor camp site, where wine is drunk and grilled dishes reign. Some evenings there is an additional charge for the accompanying music (no revelation is to be expected).

Rustic is a place worth recommending, on the island of Ovidiu, where seafood is served under a thatched roof.

Journey

Trolleybuses travel between Konstancja and Mamaia quickly and without complications. The line #40 it leads from the railway station to the center of Constana, via Ferdinand bulevardul to the Pescarie stop at the Parc Hotel, in the south of Mamaia. Here you can change to the trolleybus #23 the 47, which, heading north, pass the most important hotels. In summer, buses run regularly along the coastal boulevard (5 km).
